Two FIRs lodged against CPI(M) leader, day after his house came under attack; one held

Two FIRs have been registered against senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya a day after his house came under attack by miscreants. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has warned him of legal action for his “Hindutva” comments. 

“He wrote on his verified social media platform yesterday morning, describing the incident as an ‘attack by Hindutva supporters’. The entire Hindu community is angry over this. If Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya does not correct his use of the word ‘Hindutva supporter,’ legal action will also be taken against him,” Mr Adhikari said. He added that two FIRs have already been filed against the senior Communist leader. 

Meanwhile, Mr Bhattacharya said that he is happy that the FIRs were filed against him and that the law has the right to take its own course. “What I will say will now be dictated by the CM? How does he have so much arrogance, just because he has come to power? We will humble him soon,” Mr Bhattacharya told The Hindu, reacting to Mr Adhikari’s comments. 

The CM condemned the attack on Mr Bhattacharya’s house and said that their government has taken the necessary action against the accused. However, he added that their government will not tolerate this “attack” on religion and faith by Mr Bhattacharya. 

“We want to expose these people in front of every Bengali Hindu… He should be arrested immediately,” Pritam Dutta, one of the persons who filed the police complaints which was converted into the FIR said. 

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police arrested Susanta Guchait, the prime accused in the attack on Mr Bhattacharya’s house. He was produced in court on Friday and taken into police custody. 

On Thursday (October 8, 2026), after the former MP’s house came under attack, he accused “Hindutva miscreants” of the incident.  

CPI(M) State secretary Mohammad Salim accused that there is complete lawlessness in the State. “Suvendu is saying that since Bikash speaks against religion, he was attacked. Then he is giving a certificate to the attack. If this is the example he is setting, then no one in this State is safe,” Mr Salim said.
