The Medical College police have registered a case against a 20-year-old woman after a six-month-old foetus was allegedly flushed down a toilet at SAT Hospital late Sunday.

According to the police, the Thiruvallam native, who was around six months pregnant, allegedly arrived at the hospital after allegedly consuming abortion pills obtained based on information from the internet. She is said to have requested a medical termination of pregnancy after reaching the hospital.

She soon developed excessive bleeding and sought treatment. During the initial examination, doctors suspected that she was pregnant, and further inquiries revealed that she was unmarried.

The police stated that the woman later entered a restroom where she allegedly delivered the fetus, which she purportedly placed in the toilet closet and flushed.

The incident came to light after hospital staff noticed bloodstains near the restroom and alerted the authorities, including the police and the fire force.

The Fire and Rescue Services personnel subsequently dismantled the toilet system and opened the septic tank to recover the foetus. The body was subsequently sent for medico-legal examination to determine the exact cause of death.

The police also suspect that three men, who allegedly accompanied the woman to the hospital, fled the premises after the incident came to light.
