Trinamool using SIR to deflect attention from its 14- year misrule in Bengal, says BJP

The Trinamool Congress is using the protest against Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to divert the attention of the people of West Bengal from its 14 year misrule, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said on Wednesday (November 5, 2025).

“Trinamool Congress is using SIR as a shield. What is the purpose of this drama, this strong language, this protest [against SIR]. The purpose is to divert the attention of the people from the institutional loot and deteriorating law and order situation under Trinamool Congress government for the past 14 years,” Mr. Bhattacharya said.

The remark by the West Bengal BJP president came a day after the Trinamool Congress leadership led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit the streets in Kolkata in protests against SIR. Mr. Bhattacharya also ridiculed the claims by Ms. Banerjee that she will bring down the BJP government at the Centre if names of genuine voters are removed from electoral rolls during SIR.

“Why is All India Trinamool Congress, which is saying that it will remove the BJP government from power at Centre, not visible in the Bihar Assembly polls. As an all -India party they have certain responsibilities to the people of the country,” he said.

Mr. Bhattacharya said that the Trinamool Congress can always approach the Supreme Court if the party has any opposition to the SIR.

“SIR is a Constitutional process and the BJP has nothing to do with that. If the Trinamool has any opposition to a process being conducted by the ECI they can approach the Supreme Court,” the BJP leader said.

Every unnatural death in the State will be attributed to SIR, Mr. Bhattacharya said amidst reports of deaths due to apprehensions over SIR.

Speaking at a gathering, Union Minister of State and BJP leader Sukanata Majumdar said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is opposing CAA but people should be aware that Hindus who have come to India from Bangladesh till December 31, 2024 even without any valid documents will not be deported.

Sources in the BJP said that Sunil Bansal, party observer to the State, has suggested that the party leaders should explain the representatives of the community about CAA, but not force people to apply for citizenship under it. The remarks come at a time when a section of Matua leaders affiliated to Trinamool Congress led by party MP Mamatabala Thakur began a hunger strike against SIR

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress leadership has decided to raise the issue of SIR in the ensuing winter session of West Bengal Assembly. A resolution against the SIR is likely to be tabled in the next session of West Bengal Assembly.
