Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday inaugurated the newly constructed ₹60.68-crore ‘L’-shaped flyover at the Sardar Patel Road-Rajiv Gandhi Salai junction.

The flyover at the Madhya Kailash junction in south Chennai will allow vehicles proceeding to Rajiv Gandhi Salai from Guindy to turn right, avoiding the traffic signal. The Chief Minister’s convoy was the first to use the flyover.

The 652-metre-long facility with 19 spans is uni-directional and two lanes wide. The right turn at the top is built with a radius of 45 metres to ensure the safety of motorists.

The flyover has been designed for a maximum speed of 30 km/hr, and several other safety features, such as taller retaining walls at the turn, and warning signs, have been incorporated.

It is expected to reduce congestion at the junction as it is estimated that 60% of the traffic from Guindy would take a right turn into OMR.

Highways Minister E.V. Velu, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian, Highways Secretary R. Selvaraj, and Chief Engineer Jawahar Muthuraj were present on the occasion.
