The Tirupati district police have slapped Preventive Detention (PD) Act on six individuals involved in various forms of crime as a preventive measure to safeguard public safety.

PD Act is invoked against individuals generally involved in drug trafficking, murder, crime against women, human trafficking, narcotics related offences, land grabbing etc., who pose a threat to public peace, security and property, and with the larger objective of preventing situations that may lead to crime.

Addressing a media conference in Tirupati on Sunday (November 16, 2025), the Superintendent of Police L. Subbarayudu announced that the invoking of the PD Act would effectively identify, monitor and control individuals posing a risk to public safety and societal harmony.

“With lakhs of devotees visiting Tirupati district, this measure is intended to safeguard their safety and enforce strict action against those who threaten public safety. Special attention is given to POCSO cases involving crime against minor girls. Rowdy sheets are opened against offenders and information is collected to invoke the PD Act against repeat offenders”, he explained.

The first two in the list against whom the PD Act has been slapped are Sheikh Kalesha (33) and Kanupuru Srihari (38), both hailing from Gudur mandal, and having ten and six cases respectively against them for offences including possession of marijuana and narcotics, murder and robbery.

Syed Azeem (30) of Tirupati, Vattikunta Arun Kumar (32) of Pulicherla mandal of Chittoor district, have cases for kidnap, murder and abduction.

Similarly, Midhuri Sunil (29) of Nellore town, an accused in 34 cases including dowry harassment, theft and matka violations, is booked under PD Act, along with Prasanna Kumar (32) of Sullurpeta, who has eighteen cases on him for offences that included house breaking, attempted murder and daytime ganja offences.

“The above persons were arrested as their activities created fear among the public and posed a threat to peace and security”, Mr. Subbarayudu told the media.

He also instructed the police officials across the district to maintain strict surveillance on the activities of criminals and goondas and prepare a special list. He appealed to the public to report any activity threatening public safety by dialling the control room at ‘112’.
