Three tourists drowned in sea off Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on Friday (October 3, 2025) evening. Four are missing. The victims hail from two families.

A 17-year old girl was rescued and is undergoing treatment. Three bodies were recovered, the police said. Due to rough seas, the search operation was stopped at night.

“The incident occurred around 4 p.m. off the Shiroda Velagar beach. Eight persons entered the water. They included children, women and men. They started drowning. One of them was rescued. We could recover three bodies. Four are still missing,” Mohan Dahikar, Superintendent of Police, Sidhudurg, told The Hindu.

Six persons belonged to the Kittur family from Belgavi in Karnataka, while two persons were from the Maniar family in Maharashtra’s Kudal.

The police said they were playing in the sea by holding hands, when a huge wave swept them away. The group from the Kittur family comprised Irfan Mohammad Isaq Kittur, 36; Iqwan Imran Kittur, 15; Fareen Irfan Kittur, 34; Ibad Irfan Kittur, 13; Namira Aftab Akhtar, 16; and Isra Imran Kittur. The Maniar family members were Farhan Mohammad Maniar, 25; and Zakir Nisar Maniar, 13.

Isra Imran Kittur was rescued. She is being treated at the Shiroda sub-district hospital.

The police said the search operation will resume on Saturday morning.
