Three people were killed when a truck carrying a load of coconuts fell into a canal between Donepudi and Kotipalli villages in Kolluru mandal of Bapatla district on Friday afternoon.

District Superintendent of Police B. Umamaheswar said the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. when a group from Chintamotu village of Bhattiprolu mandal was transporting coconuts loaded from Lanka (Island) villages of Kolluru mandal to Cherukupalli.

The vehicle reportedly went out of control and fell into a roadside canal. Three persons were in the cabin while four were seated atop the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Chatragadda Kanta Rao, 50, and Pesarlanka Srinivasa Rao, 55, both from Chintamotu, and Sheikh Ismail, 60, from Vellaturu. Three people sustained injuries. Police shifted the injured to Tenali Government Hospital, the SP said, adding that a detailed investigation is underway.

He noted that nine special teams have been formed to monitor compliance with road safety rules on the national highways.
