A repeat offender wanted in multiple theft cases was shot in the leg by police after he attacked a constable with a knife and an iron rod while attempting to evade arrest near Bongulur Gate on the Outer Ring Road on Tuesday night.

According to the police, a team from Nalgonda district acted on a tip-off that the accused, identified as Bhushmi Srikanth, was travelling in a goods carrier vehicle. The team tried to arrest him near Adibatla.

Police said Srikanth attacked a Nalgonda police constable with a knife and an iron rod before trying to flee. In response, the police opened fire, injuring him in the leg and bringing the chase to an end.

Srikanth, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was shifted to a hospital in Vanasthalipuram for treatment before being taken to Nalgonda for further investigation. The injured police constable is also said to be stable.

According to the police, Srikanth is a repeat offender involved in more than 10 theft cases. He is also an accused in the murder of a police constable-turned-teacher in Narsapur town of Andhra Pradesh four years ago.

Further investigation is underway.
