Noted theatre personality Prasanna has expressed displeasure with the State government for what he termed as “inadequate” recognition and support to the Mysuru-based Indian Institute of Educational Theatre (IIET), even as he rejected a grant of ₹75,000 sanctioned to the institute.

Speaking at a national theatre workshop held at the IIET on Thursday, Mr. Prasanna, who appeared let-down over the meagre funding, pointed out that the amount was significantly lower than grants extended to several amateur theatre groups.

“The government has sanctioned ₹75,000 to our institute, which is four times less than what some amateur groups have received. I respectfully reject this aid,” he said.

The veteran theatre practitioner noted that the IIET has been functioning for the past four years through personal contributions and public donations, conducting workshops, seminars, and theatre performances. “We do not need government money. We are running the institute with our own resources and the support of theatre enthusiasts,” he asserted.

While declining financial aid, Mr. Prasanna, however, clarified that the institute remains open to collaborations with both State and Central governments, provided they approach the IIET with intent. “We will not go to anyone with a begging bowl,” he added.

Highlighting the challenges faced by theatre artists, Mr. Prasanna criticised the lack of access to policymakers. “There is no award left for me to receive, yet I cannot meet a Minister easily. Film stars, however, get immediate access and attention. This reflects the condition of theatre in the country,” he remarked.

He also dismissed the perception that he receives government funding for theatre activities, stating that the institute is entirely self-funded.

Lashing out at those in power for undermining theatre, Mr. Prasanna said, “Respect an actor as an actor, not because they are a film star. Respect theatre. We will not run behind political parties like the Congress or the BJP for funds. This is a serious issue concerning the future of theatre.”
