A couple who was tenant and two others were arrested for stealing eight sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver objects, and ₹ 2.5 lakh cash from the house of a landowner in Virinchipuram village on the outskirts of the Vellore Corporation.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as Ashok Kumar, 42, his wife Lakshmi, 38, accomplice Anjali, 34, and her husband Vimal, 37. They are residents of Vellore.

Initial inquiry revealed that the victim Illayarani, 37, was living in her house on the first floor of the building in Virinchipuram village. She rented the ground floor of the house to the couple Ashok Kumar and Lakshmi a few months ago.

On November 20 when she returned home after attending a family function, Illayarani found her house lock broken. She also found that valuables and cash in cupboards were missing. Based on the alert, Bagayam police inspected the house along with sniffer dogs and forensic experts.

Vellore SP A. Mayilvaganan formed special teams to nab the suspects. Investigations revealed that the couple frequently visited the victim’s house. The couple found that the victim was staying alone. Subsequently, police interrogated the couple, who told police that along with their friends, they did the burglary. Police recovered gold jewellery and cash from them. A case was registered. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
