To strengthen climate-resilient agriculture, the Telangana Agriculture Department launched a special weather advisory initiative aimed at providing farmers with advance information on weather conditions and rainfall patterns.
As part of the initiative, the Agriculture Department entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DIL India and Evidence Action, a Chicago-based organisation.
According to Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, under the programme, farmers in 17 districts of Telangana will receive advance weather alerts through WhatsApp messages on their mobile phones. The alerts will provide information on the likely onset of rainfall and weather conditions in their respective mandals, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding agricultural operations.
Officials said the weather-based advisories would help farmers plan critical farming activities such as sowing, procurement and application of seeds and fertilisers, irrigation scheduling, and other field operations in a timely manner. Mr. Tummala Nageswara Rao emphasised the importance of technology-driven solutions in modern agriculture and said timely weather information would empower farmers to make better decisions and minimise crop losses. The programme would initially cover 17 districts and could be expanded further based on its success and farmer response.
