Tamil Nadu to continue to get light to moderate rains till Sunday

With the Southwest Monsoon being active over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast the likelihood of light to moderate rain at a few places over north Tamil Nadu, at isolated places over southern parts of the State and over Puducherry and Karaikal area till Sunday. The rain is also likely to be accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places. 

The RMC also has said a north-south trough from south interior Karnataka to Comorin area across Tamil Nadu at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists and an East-West trough from the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Bay of Bengal to South Kerala across the Gulf of Mannar at 5.8 km above mean sea level is now seen from Southwest Bay of Bengal to north Kerala across north Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka at 5.8 km above mean sea level.  

On Thursday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Thiruvannamalai, Thirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts, Puducherry and Karaikal area. On Friday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore and Kancheepuram districts. 

During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, rainfall occurred at many places over north coastal parts of the State; at a few places over interior Tamil Nadu; and at isolated places over South coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. Light rain occurred over Karaikal area and dry weather prevailed over Puducherry. Palayamkottai recorded the highest maximum temperature of 37.9 degree Celsius and Karur Paramathi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 21.5 degree Celsius in the plains.
