Madurai East Assembly constituency in Madurai district is a mix of both urban and rural areas. In 2009, after the delimitation of the constituencies, the rural and the extension areas were added to Madurai East Assembly constituency.
In the 2026 Assembly election, the incumbent MLA P. Moorthy of the DMK who has served as the Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration in the DMK regime, will lock horns with K. Mahendran of the AIADMK. Mr. Mahendran, a former government advocate, commands respect from the people of the region.
