The Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu police has busted yet another gang of inter-State criminals and seized SIM boxes used to cheat people in the name of “digital arrests”.
According to a press release, the police, acting on specific inputs, unearthed the SIM box network operating in India. Last month, multiple raids were conducted across Tamil Nadu, resulting in the seizure of 14 high-capacity SIM boxes and the arrest of six suspects.
Subsequent investigations led to the recovery of one more SIM box, and five SIM boxes were found to have been destroyed by the accused in Ramanathapuram district fearing arrest by the police, the release said.
The key suspect in the case had moved eight SIM Boxes to Delhi. The gang had established operations in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Bihar. On the instructions of Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, multiple investigation teams were formed to conduct simultaneous searches in the three States.
The special team arrested Tarikh Alam (19), resident of Nilothi, and two of his associates — Lokesh Kumar (33) and Ashok Kumar (40).
The searches resulted in the seizure of 24 SIM boxes from Narela and Nilothi, both located in New Delhi. On technical analysis, it was found that the gadgets were actively used for digital arrest scam by international cyber criminals.
In the last two months, the Cyber Crime Wing had dismantled 44 SIM boxes, which was a major blow to the international cyber scam syndicate, the release said.
