Specialist surgeons at HCG Suchirayu Hospital in Hubballi performed an advanced surgery to treat a 48-year-old patient having a condition of narrowed windpipe resulting in severe breathing difficulties.

Addressing presspersons in Hubballi on June 30, Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist Dr. Govind Desai said that they had performed an advanced airway intervention, Electrosurgery with Balloon Bronchoplasty, on a patient suffering from post-intubation tracheal stenosis, a serious condition in which the windpipe becomes significantly narrowed following prolonged intubation, leading to severe breathing difficulties, and reduced quality of life.

He said the patient from Hubballi was experiencing severe breathing difficulties. A thorough diagnosis revealed that he was suffering due to post-intubation tracheal stenosis, a condition that developed following prolonged intubation, and resulted in significant narrowing of the windpipe.

Dr. Desai said that, through surgery, the patient’s airway was restored using a minimally invasive bronchoscopic approach. The intervention involved bronchoscopic identification of the narrowed segment of the trachea, controlled electrosurgical radial incisions to release the scar tissue causing airway obstruction, followed by balloon bronchoplasty to dilate the narrowed airway, and restore normal airflow, The patient recovered after the procedure. He was discharged the following day in a stable condition with marked relief in symptoms, the doctor said.

Chief Operating Officer of HCG Suchirayu Hospital said that successful management of this complex airway condition reflected the hospital’s continued focus on making advanced medical expertise and technology accessible to patients in north Karnataka.
