Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumar has instructed officials to take action against the menace of stray dogs in the district in light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the matter.

Participating in a meeting on measures to control stray dogs in Mandya district, in Karnataka, on February 23, Mr. Kumar said the urban and rural local bodies should take necessary action in co-ordination with officials of the departments concerned.

While nodal officers have been appointed in every urban local body to curb the stray dog nuisance, he said people should be discouraged from throwing waste indiscriminately, and awareness should be created among the public to prevent stray dogs from entering bus stands. Steps must also be taken to construct compound walls around public buildings.

Sterilisation surgery

All stray dogs must undergo sterilisation surgery, be relocated to suitable shelters, and be vaccinated against rabies, he said while instructing officials to take necessary action in the regard.

Construction of shelters

Measures have been initiated to construct a total of eight shelters — one in each taluk under the jurisdiction of local bodies.

The meeting was informed that a total of 190 stray dogs have been identified within institutional premises, like schools, colleges, bus stands, and hospital campuses. Steps are being taken to carry out sterilisation surgeries, and subsequently relocate them to shelters.

The meeting also discussed how food waste attracts stray dogs, and the need to keep dustbins covered, and dispose off the waste on a daily basis.

The meeting was attended by Urban Development Cell Planning Officer Narasimhamurthy, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Department Shivalingaiah, and Municipal Commissioner Pampashree.
