Swami Vivekananda emphasised the essential oneness of all human beings irrespective of different caste, religion and region, B. Vivekanandan, former Chairman of the Centre for American and European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, said on Monday.

Prof. Vivekanandan was delivering a lecture on Swami Vivekananda organised by the Department of International Relations attached to the Capital Centre Campus of the Central University of Kerala.

The essence of Vivekananda’s teachings and practice was Tattwamasi or the essential oneness of God and human beings, Prof. Vivekanandan said. He believed in Democratic Socialism. In 1896 he declared that ‘I am a Socialist.’ He maintained that religious harmony is the unifying factor in the world, Prof. Vivekanadan said.

Suresh Rangarajan, Dean, School of Global Studies, Central University of Kerala, spoke on the significance Swami Vivekananda attached to the power of youth and the power of concentration. Swami Vivekananda held that spiritual awakening is the path towards universal brotherhood, Prof. Rangarajan said.

Dr. Sivakumar, Director of the Capital Centre, spoke on the role of Swami Vivekananda in India’s national integration.
