The Supreme Court on Monday (April 13, 2026) expressed shock at the impunity with which sand miners have operated in the fragile Chambal sanctuary zone, killing a forest guard in Madhya Pradesh and the digging of the foundation of pillars of a bridge in the area connecting the State to Rajasthan.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said the course of events and lack of any action against the miners revealed the failure or the connivance of the Madhya Pradesh government in the criminal activities.
