Hyderabad witnessed a sudden spell of heavy showers on Sunday evening after an otherwise bright and sunny day, bringing much-needed respite from the heat but leaving several areas waterlogged. According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the city saw a sharp surge in rainfall within three hours, resulting in widespread waterlogging.
The downpour began around 7 p.m., initially lashing the northern and northeastern parts of the city before spreading to other localities. Commuters returning from weekend outings were caught unprepared, with many forced to take shelter under metro stations in Secunderabad at Paradise and Parade Ground. Fortunately, with it being a Sunday, traffic snarls were largely avoided despite waterlogged roads.
Areas including Mettuguda, Moula Ali, Malkajgiri, Safilguda and parts of the Secunderabad Cantonment witnessed severe waterlogging. Stretches such as the Rail Nilayam underpass towards Mettuguda, Tarnaka, Habsiguda, Nacharam towards Mallapur, Panjagutta, Ameerpet and SR Nagar also reported inundation. Though congestion was minimal, waterlogged roads reduced traffic movement to narrow single-lane passages. In several localities, those who had parked vehicles by the roadside were forced to wait for the water to recede before moving out.
Personnel from all three commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda were deployed at key junctions to regulate traffic. Teams from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were also pressed into service to clear flooded stretches.
As of 10 p.m., Hayatnagar had recorded the highest rainfall with 87.5 mm, followed by 70.3 mm in Kapra, 61.5 mm in Cherlapally, 56.8 mm in Neredmet, 55 mm in Malkajgiri, 54 mm in Uppal, 52.3 mm in Anandbagh, 47.3 mm in Mallapur, 47 mm in Secunderabad Cantonment, 46.3 mm in Safilguda, 46 mm in Secunderabad, 40.8 mm in Moula Ali, 37.3 mm in Mettuguda, 34 mm in Alwal, 30 mm in Sainikpuri, 27.5 mm in West Marredpally, 24.5 mm in Musheerabad and 24 mm in Ramanthapur.
