In line with the announcement of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin that the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam initiative would be expanded, the Tamil Nadu government is set to launch the second phase of the programme on December 12. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would formally launch the expansion of the programme during an event in Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium in Chennai on Friday.

The State government is organising a programme titled ‘Vellum Thamizh Pengal’ on that day, in which it would showcase its achievements in empowering women in the State through various welfare programmes, an official release said. Gandhian and social activist Krishnammal Jagannathan and Paralympics medalist Thulasimathi Murugesan are among the personalities who would take part in the event.

The CM announced Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam on the floor of the Assembly on March 27, 2023, through which a total of 1,13,75,492 beneficiaries were selected in the first phase of the programme, and a sum of ₹1,000 was credited into their bank accounts every month. The Deputy CM had announced that the programme would be expanded further.

The event titled ‘Vellum Thamizh Pengal’ scheduled on December 12 would witness testimonies from women who benefitted from various welfare programmes, including the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, Nannilam Magalir Nilavudamai Thittam, Vidiyal Payanam, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, Nalam Kakkum Stalin, Thozhi Viduthigal, among others.
