The State government has released around ₹792 crore out of the ₹1,000 crore special grants announced for the development of Shiggaon Assembly constituency, Haveri district in charge Minister Shivanand Patil said in Savanur in Haveri district on Sunday.

“We had assured special grants of ₹1,000 crore to the Shiggaon Assembly constituency before the Assembly by-election and already released ₹792 crore for various developmental works,” he said. This included ₹300 crore for a drinking water project for the towns of Shiggaon, Savanur, and Bankapur .

He was speaking after inaugurating an Indira Canteen and hostel buildings, and laying the foundation stone for the renovation of Ambedkar Circle. He said the Varada-Bedti river linking project was a dream project, and the government had never stepped back from it.

“Efforts were under way to secure better prices for sugarcane growers through discussions with sugar factory owners,’’ Mr. Patil, the sugar Minister said.

Syed Azeempeer Khadri, HESCOM chairman and former MLA, complained of protocol violation in organising government programmes in Haveri district. He said that officers were ignoring him while organising officials functions. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the district police and urged SP Yashoda Vantagudi to step up vigil and instruct police officers to curb illegal activities and to act strictly against anti-social elements in the district as well as the Shiggaon constituency.
