A team of officials of the Social Welfare Department raided two boys’ hostels in the city at 4.30 a.m. on Monday after complaints that people not enrolled in the colleges were staying there.
Two hostels, namely Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Post-Metric Boys Hostel, Srigandadakaval (370 student strength) and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar PUC Boys Hostel, Mallathalli (140 student strength) located on the same campus were raided.
According to the police, the unauthorised people were allegedly staying with the support of the warden and watchmen, and most of them were working with food delivery apps or bike services.
The issue came to light when a student complained to senior officials of the department. The issue was then reported to the Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, and a team was formed to carry out the inspection.
“A few students were staying because they could not get admission elsewhere, while many were not studying anywhere but staying with the support of regional political leaders and the warden,” an official said, adding that about 12 people were held during the raid, but many ran away when others were being questioned. The raid found lapses in hostel management.
An FIR has been registered with the Kamakshipalya police against the warden and others for allowing unauthorised people to stay.
