State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas has directed the authorities to immediately repair the damaged street lights in the city.

The street lights had stopped functioning after the rain intensified. The Commission ordered that an official of the rank of Assistant Executive Engineer, Department of Local Self-Government, be deputed to inspect the damaged street lights after a site visit.

The report is to be submitted to the secretary of the Kochi Corporation. The secretary must accord top priority to the report and address the complaints without delay. An action-taken report has to be submitted to the Commission within three weeks, according to a communication.

The chairperson asked the Assistant Executive Engineer to appear on behalf of the Corporation secretary at the Commission’s sitting on September 10 to furnish details related to the complaint.

The Commission took suo motu notice of the damaged street lights based on media reports that said street lights at Pallimukku, Panampilly Nagar, NH bypass, Stadium Link Road, Thevara and Edappally were found to be damaged.
