He said that a young woman had been killed for marrying outside her caste, and what was even shocking was the fact that deep-rooted hatred towards the lower caste had resulted in a father killing his own daughter. Although the police arrested the accused, there was an atmosphere of fear in the village. Steps would be taken to provide permanent rehabilitation to the family after addressing the issue with the government, he said.
To a query, he said that he had received a few complaints against officials in connection with the incident and steps would be taken to punish the guilty after thorough inquiry.
During his visit to the village, Dr. Murthy visited the house of Vivekanand Doddamani, who had lost his wife in the incident of honour killing, the place of assault, and where the murder took place, and collected information from the residents, police officials and members of various dalit organisations about the incident. He gave instructions to the officials.
Dr. Murthy was accompanied by Sunil Ukkali, member of the commission; H.S. Shivaramu, secretary; Gunjan Arya, Superintendent of Police; Geeta C.D., Additional DC, and office bearers of the Dalit organisations M. Aravind, Gurunath Ullikashi, Premanath Chikkatumbal, and Paramesh Kale.
Pramod Mutalik, head of Sri Rama Sene, visited the hospital and enquired about the health of the injured persons in the assault. Expressing shock over a father killing his daughter over inter-caste marriage, he said the incident showed deep-rooted casteism in the society and that the dream of B.R. Ambedkar has not been fulfilled yet. He demanded that the accused in such cases should be shot dead.
