Rains lash Andhra’s Nellore, more in store for Monday

Most of the rains caused by the cyclonic storm Ditwah was concentrated in SPSR Nellore district on Sunday (November 30) while other stations in Chittoor and Tirupati registered light to moderate showers.

Kavali recorded 88.75 mm, considered heavy rainfall, while Jaladanki, Navooru and Bucchireddipalem, all in SPSR Nellore district, received 56.25 mm, 55 mm and 50.75 mm respectively, between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m., according to the realtime rainfall information provided by the A.P. State Development Planning Society (APSDPS).

A few stations in Tirupati and Chittoor districts recorded below 33 mm rainfall during the period. Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Krishna, Sri Satha Sai districts received very light to light showers, less than 20 mm, on Sunday.

At 2.30 p.m., Ditwah was positioned over southwest Bay of Bengal, about 90 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, 120 km northeast of Karaikal, 90 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 150 km south-southeast of Chennai. ṭ

By 5.30 p.m., the cyclone weakened into a deep depression the IMD bulletin of 8.30 p.m. said. It is likely to weaken further into a depression by Monday morning. The system will be centered over southwest Bay of Bengal within a minimum distance of 30 km from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by Sunday midnight.

For Monday, there is a heavy rainfall forecast at isolated places across the three regions of North and South Coastal A.P. and Rayalaseema. Sqaully winds, with speed 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely at isolated places in the State. It will further come down to 35-45 kmph by Monday evening. Fishermen have been advised to stay off the coast till December 2.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has asked officials to remain alert for the next 48 hours. She instructed authorities to issue continuous public warnings, intensify field inspections, and ensure that all precautionary measures are in place.

The Minister, on Sunday, reviewed the situation via video conference with District Collectors of Nellore, Tirupati, Kadapa, Chittoor, and Annamayya, along with authorities from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA). 

She instructed officials to clear roads of fallen trees and hoardings, restore disrupted power lines immediately, deploy officials to vulnerable points, and evacuate families to relief shelters wherever required.

Two NDRF teams have been deployed in Nellore and Kadapa, while three SDRF units are stationed in Venkatagiri, with additional rescue forces kept on standby.
