Under the new animal adoption policy at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), the public can adopt specific animals for a period of five years and name selected young animals with no additional naming fee.

BBP said that under the earlier policy, naming rights required an additional 25% charge on the adoption amount and the adoption was valid for only one year.

Revised policy

“As per the revised policy as per the 159th Governing Council Meeting of Zoo Authority of Karnataka held on July 10, citizens can now adopt and name an animal for five years with a one-time payment and no additional naming fee. The adoption contribution supports the animal’s welfare, including feed and medical care,” BBP said.

It added that the chosen name remains with the animal throughout its lifetime, the adopters will also receive a certificate of adoption, their name will be displayed near the enclosure, there will be 80G tax exemption on 50% of the adoption amount, and five complimentary entry passes would be given each year for five years to the Zoo, Safari, and Butterfly Park. BBP said that the adopters will not have direct contact with the animal.

“Interested individuals may choose a species and submit proposed names to the naming committee of BBP for approval, ensuring the name is unique and complies with the policy. This opportunity is offered on a first-come, first-served basis,” BBP said.

Tiger cubs adopted

BBP also announced that the Prestige Group has adopted two male tiger cubs which have been named Simba and Sheru.
