Tensions prevailed in the Suryanagar Gram Panchayat in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas over the desecration of an idol on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) morning, with the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging “Trinamool State’s administrative indifference” in the face of public protests.

Protests erupted in the Kakdwip region, with agitating locals blocking the national highway.

“The situation has turned communal, so we have to wait,” a senior police officer told The Hindu today, adding that efforts are on to identify the miscreants behind the act.

“The locals had blocked the national highway over the issue along with the damaged idol and refused to go ahead with the immersion. Police persuaded with the agitators for hours to withdraw the blockade which was causing serious public [inconvenience] with ambulances carrying patients also being stuck,” the West Bengal Police stated on social media.

They added that when the agitators allegedly started pelting stones at the police, “minimum force was resorted to” by the police to disperse the mob.

“The immersion of the idol was facilitated thereafter,” the Police’s statement further said.

Meanwhile, leaders of the West Bengal BJP made serious allegations about the desecration of the idol, demanding immediate arrests and a probe into “administrative negligence.”

“In the early morning, villagers discovered that the idol of Maa Kali had been vandalised — the same temple where for years the villagers have offered worship and found solace has now been desecrated by miscreants. But what is even more shameful is the role of the administration,” BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya said on social media.
