Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday directed the Mysuru district administration officials to prepare a detailed and scientific blueprint for comprehensive development of ‘Greater Mysuru’ without compromising on the city’s ‘prestige and culture’.

Presiding over the first meeting of ‘Greater Mysuru’ at Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) Zonal 3 office premises, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the blueprint should ensure that Mysuru does not encounter the problems Bengaluru faces like traffic congestion and problems relating to underground drainage, footpaths, drinking water or sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The meeting comes after months of debates over the long-pending demand by people’s representatives for creation of a ‘Greater Mysuru City Corporation’ or ‘Bruhat Mysuru Mahanagara Palike’ by merging the urban local bodies on the outskirts of Mysuru like the City Municipal Councils and Town Panchayats.

Though Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed himself in favour of creating a ‘Greater Mysuru’ for Mysuru, he put a condition that the city’s dignity, culture and vastness should not be compromised during the exercise.

“Broad roads are Mysuru’s hallmark. Greater Mysuru must be even more systematically designed,” he said.

While planning for basic infrastructure, the Chief Minister instructed the officials to scientifically consider the population of the city during the next 15 to 20 years instead of limiting itself to the current population.

“Greater Mysuru should be well-equipped and systematically planned. There should no traffic congestion under any circumstances,” he said while instructing the officials to use modern technology while preparing plans in all areas right from job creation to solid waste management.

Modern technology should also be deployed for scientific disposal of waste, including industrial waste, he said.

New layouts

When new layouts are developed, Mr. Siddaramaiah said drainage, roads, underground sewage system, water, electricity and parks must be properly planned.

He pointed out that Mysuru required a peripheral ring road and asked the officials to start its planning for the same right away.

Revenue generation

While emphasising the need to increase revenue generation, the Chief Minister asked the officials to prepare clear estimates and plans for the same.

Also, the number of civic workers should increase in proportion to the city’s growing population, he said.

Minister for Urban Development Byrathi Suresh, Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa, MLAs G.T. Deve Gowda, Tanveer Sait, and Harish Gowda, MLCs Yathindra, A.H. Vishwanath, Thimmaiah, C.N. Manje Gowda and K. Shivakumar were also present during the meeting.
