The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized around four tonnes of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System (PDS) from an express train at Jolarpet railway station in Tirupattur on Thursday.

Police said that, based on orders of Collector K. Sivasoundaravalli, special police teams were formed to prevent PDS rice smuggling in the district. During a surprise check at Jolarpet railway station, the police team found four tonnes of PDS in 80 gunny bags on the extreme end of the platform. They seized the rice and handed it over to the Tirupattur Taluk Supply Officer (TSO) of the Department of Civil Supplies.

Police analysed the CCTV footage in the railway station and found that few persons were unloading sacks of PDS rice near the platform at the railway station. Police said the seized rice consignment was meant to be sold to wholesale dealers in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects. A case was registered by Jolarpet police and further probe is under way.
