With the arrest of a habitual offender, the police have cracked seven burglary cases and recovered stolen property worth ₹10.30 lakh, Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa said here on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, Dr. Sharanappa said that the accused has been identified as Mallikarjun D. Talwar, a driver who is a resident of Yergal village in Chittapur taluk.

The accused is said to have been involved in a series of burglaries reported within the city limits.

Dr. Sharanappa said that the arrest was made during the investigation of a burglary case registered on March 1 at Ashok Nagar Police Station in which gold ornaments and valuables worth ₹2.65 lakh were stolen from a residence in Kanta Colony.

Based on credible information and sustained investigation, the police detained the suspect near Biddapur Colony and subjected him to questioning.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in seven burglary cases reported in different parts of the city.

Following his confession, the police recovered stolen property worth ₹10.30 lakh and arrested him. The accused has been produced before court which remanded him to judicial custody.

Locked House Beat System

Meanwhile, the police have introduced Locked House Beat System to enhance security of residences that remain locked when owners are away.

The initiative aims to prevent burglaries through regular monitoring and patrols by beat police personnel.

Dr. Sharanappa has urged citizens planning to travel out of station to register their houses under the new system by informing the Police Control Room or their jurisdictional police and sharing details such as their address, location pin, travel dates and contact numbers.

Under the system, beat officers will carry out periodic checks of registered locked houses, particularly during night hours, to detect any suspicious activity, the Police Commissioner said.

He has appealed to people to install CCTV cameras in their residential premises, stating that surveillance systems significantly help deter burglaries and assist police in investigation.
