Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday (April 17, 2026) accused the Union government of being unreasonable for not including his proposed amendments to the Delimitation [Constitution (131st Amendment)] Bill and stated that these were aimed at preventing gerrymandering, ensuring a free and fair exercise, and introducing double-member constituencies.

In a statement released on social media — after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 failed to be passed in the Lok Sabha, and the Union government shelving the Delimitation Bill — Mr. Owaisi said his proposals sought to keep the existing proportion of Lok Sabha seats so that southern States do not lose representation in comparison to the States in north India. He also proposed converting women reserved seats into two member constituencies, with two parliamentarians representing each seat. This would include a woman. He posited that this approach would avoid “bad faith” reservation.
