Two youths drowned in an irrigation canal at Poondi village near Walajah town in Ranipet while they went to take bath in the waterbody.

Police said the deceased were identified as P. Arun (24), a resident of Chennai, and S. Manikandan, a native of Nemili near Ranipet. They were working in a private electronic company in Oragadam in Kancheepuram.

Initial inquiry revealed that along with a group of friends, the duo camped near the canal to spend their leisure time. The region has been witnessing regular rains, resulting in rise of water level in water bodies in the area.

Police said that as their friends were doing other work including cooking at the bund, the duo jumped into the canal to take bath. Unaware of the depth of the waterbody, the duo went to a deeper portion of the canal, which is around 40-ft deep and drowned.

Based on alert, fire fighters from Ranipet rushed to the spot. A case was registered by Walajah police. A probe is underway.
