A team of officials led by Shivamogga sub-division Assistant Commissioner Maitri H.P.S. inspected several hotels and government hostels on August 30 to check for lapses related to food safety, cleanliness, and hygiene at food establishments.
The officials inspected centres engaged in preparing, storing, and selling food items for human consumption. As part of the drive, they visited Hotel Harsha Fern, the refugee relief centre at Thavarekoppa, Savi Bakery in Vinobanagar, and Vidhatri Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
Ms. Maithri told the hotel proprietors that expired and unfit food items should be segregated immediately, and disposed of properly to prevent their use in preparation or sale. Food must be stored in clean, food-safe containers at appropriate temperature, and kitchens, food preparation areas, and storage spaces should be kept clean and dry.
Milk, meat, eggs, and ready-to-eat food should be stored at the prescribed temperature, with refrigerators, coolers and other temperature-control equipment properly maintained, she said, adding that adequate attention should be paid to food preservation and drinking water quality.
Ms. Maitri said food-handling staff should undergo periodic health check-up, and receive the necessary training in safe food-handling practices. Any lapse found during the inspection must be rectified within 10 days, failing which appropriate legal action would be initiated under food safety standards, she warned.
She was accompanied by Tahsildar V.S. Rajeev, Taluk Health Officer Chandrashekar, staff of the Food Safety and Drug Administration, and Revenue Inspectors.
