The son of former Union Minister and incumbent BJP MLA Renuka Singh has been booked in a hit-and-run case after he allegedly hit a biker while driving a car, leaving him critically injured in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur on Monday (January 5, 2026).

A police officer confirmed that the accused Balwant Singh alias Lucky, 34, has been booked for rash and negligent driving and endangering human life.

The incident took place around 1 a.m. when Balwant, who was driving his friend’s SUV, hit the victim, Tribhuvan Thakur, 34, a disc jockey. Balwant was travelling with three of his friends.

As soon as the motorbike was hit by the car, Thakur fell from it and was dragged along with the car for a few metres. Balwant allegedly tried to drive away but ended up hitting a road divider.

“The victim has suffered grievous injuries on his head, ribs, legs and back. He is in a critical condition. An FIR has been registered against Balwant Singh under Sections 125(a) [act endangering personal safety of others] and 281 [rash and negligent driving] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita [BNS]. We will explore more sections as and when the victim recovers,” said an officer from Telibandha Police Station where the case was registered.

Balwant’s mother Ms. Renuka Singh was a Union Minister for Tribal affairs (2019-2023) and is the sitting MLA from Bharatpur-Sonhat constituency belonging to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh.
