No legal action if infiltrators go back on their own: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (May 28, 2026) said the Union government had constituted a high-level committee on demographic change and was committed to identifying and deporting every single infiltrator from the country.

He said Infiltrators should return on their own and those who voluntarily go back would not face any legal action. 

Mr. Shah made the remarks in Gujarat as he laid foundation stones for development projects worth ₹340 crore in the Kalol and Gandhinagar (North) Assembly constituencies in Gandhinagar.

He said that ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in West Bengal “infiltrators have started returning on their own.”

Border fencing

The Home Minister said the BJP government in West Bengal had fulfilled its promise of providing land for border fencing within 45 days of coming to power.

Mr. Shah said West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari handed over 600 hectares of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) within seven days of the formation of the government. He added that 121 hectares of land for the Chicken’s Neck Corridor had also been handed over to the Government of India. The Minister said that during the rule of the previous government in Bengal, infiltration used to take place every day, but now infiltrators had started returning on their own. The West Bengal government had now established detention centres. He expressed the hope that infiltrators would return on their own even before the identification campaign begins.

Mr. Shah said fencing and anti-infiltration infrastructure along the border was a priority for the government

“Under the leadership of Modi Ji, the saffron flag has soared across the entire Ganga route, from Gangotri to Gangasagar,” the Minister said.

He added that Gujarat’s development model had now become the nation’s development model; in 12 years of the Modi government, the party’s governance had expanded across 80% of the country’s geographical area.
