The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, one of the premier public technical and research institutions in India, is contemplating an increase in its faculty strength in view of the growing student population and the need to meet the desired Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR).

Accordingly, it has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, seeking an enhancement of sanctioned posts – from 420 to 606 for teaching faculty, and from 462 to 667 for non-teaching staff and officers.

Speaking to The Hindu, Director Prof. Bidyadhar Subudhi said that around 8,000 students from India and abroad are studying at this premier institute across various streams.

“We need to enhance our teaching staff strength to achieve the PTR of 12:1. In view of this, we have already requested the Ministry of Education and expect approval for the maximum number of teaching and non-teaching posts within six months,” he said.

At the time of Prof. Subudhi’s appointment in April 2023, the institute had 108 faculty and 35 staff vacancies. To address this, three major faculty recruitment drives were conducted between 2023 and 2025, resulting in the appointment of 95 new faculty members and the promotion of 56 existing faculty.

“We are focusing on recruiting faculty with degrees from IITs or foreign institutions. Around 85 of the recently recruited faculty members either hold degrees from IITs or have had exposure to foreign institutions,” Prof. Subudhi said.

Similarly, non-teaching staff recruitment was stepped up through eight drives and two departmental promotion committees (DPCs), covering direct recruitment, deputation, promotion, and the modified assured career progression scheme (MACPS).

“Recently, 23 technical and ministerial posts were filled through a recruitment drive conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). In all, 109 appointments and promotions were made in officers, technical, and ministerial cadres,” Prof. Subudhi added.
