Nine migrant workers from Assam died and one person was injured when scaffolding came crashing down at a construction site in the Ennore Special Economic Zone thermal power project near Ponneri on Tuesday (September 30, 2025).
The group of workers were building a concrete arch for the 1,320-MW Ennore SEZ thermal power stations when the accident took place, according to a senior official in the Avadi police commissioner’s office. They were working at a height of more than 20 feet when the iron scaffolding installed for the construction of the arch collapsed.

Fellow workers immediately rescued the 10 injured people and rushed them to the Government Stanley Hospital, but nine of them died on the way, while one injured worker is still being treated at the hospital.
The Kattur police have filed a case and are investigating the incident.
The nine deceased have been identified as Munnakempral, Vidayum Pravotsha, Sumon Karikap, Deepak Raijiung, Sarbonit Thausen, Pranto Sorong, Paban Sorong, Phaibit Phonglo, and Bimaraj Thausen, all migrant workers from Assam.
J. Radhakrishnan, chairman and managing director of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, is at the hospital, along with senior electricity officials.
