Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan on Saturday constituted a five-member committee to oversee the party’s election-related activities for the upcoming Assembly election.

A resolution to this effect was adopted in the party’s executive committee meeting held in Chennai. State-level office-bearers of the party such as A. Arunachalam, Thangavelu, A.G. Mouriya, Chandrasekhar and Dakshinamoorthy are part of the committee. The party also said ticket aspirants for the Assembly election can file their applications from Saturday. Recently, the Election Commission allotted ‘Battery Torch’ as election symbol for the party.

The meeting, presided over by Mr. Haasan, also adopted resolutions urging the Governor to prioritise the welfare of the people and act accordingly, condemning the Centre for changing the provisions of MGNREG Scheme (now VB-G RAM G scheme), commending the State government for implementing Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme and urging it to consider the demands of retired doctors.

The general council also urged the State government to form a committee, with the participation of officials and the public, to curb usage of narcotic drugs. The party is also set to host a conference titled ‘Remembering Babuji’ at Madurai on February 21 in which scholars and political leaders will participate.
