After waiting for over a decade, work to construct a bypass for Tiruvallur town has begun with Highways Minister E.V. Velu laying the foundation for its formation.

The total length of the bypass whichwas announced in the State Budget for 2012-13, will be 6.54 km. Initially, administrative sanction has been obtained for the first phase that will run for a length of 2.9 km, and will cost ₹30 crore to construct.

“Land acquisition has been completed at a cost of ₹86.28 crore. Though at present, the road is being formed with a width of two lanes, land meant for four lanes has been acquired,” explained an official source. The road will run via Periyakuppam, Melnallathur, Thirupachur, and Selai villages. About 19,714 sq.m., 38,050 sq.m., 43,192 sq.m., and 50,833 sq.m. of land have been acquired from these villages respectively.

The bypass will be 9-metre-wide and have 13 box culverts. The Phase Two of the project will have to cross Cooum river and a railway level crossing. Tiruvallur already has a bypass constructed by the National Highways Authority of India on the western side of the town.

Meanwhile, the 748-metre-long Veppampattu road overbridge, constructed at a cost of ₹44.55 crore, was also thrown open to traffic.

The 7.5-metre-wide, two-way facility will connect Veppampattu and Perumalpattu. It is expected to benefit a population of around two lakh.
