A married man and a woman were admitted to Gandhi Hospital after they consumed a poisonous substance while travelling on the Sabari Express to Secunderabad on Tuesday, in what police suspect was an attempt to end their lives.

The victims were identified as Sriram Sirish Kumar, 34, a native of Chapra village in Meliaputti mandal of Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, and Gulivendula Neelaveni, 34, a resident of the same village, who was living in Moosapet, Hyderabad.

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), railway authorities alerted police after the two passengers were found unconscious in the general coach of Train No. 20630 Sabari Express as it was approaching Secunderabad Railway Station at around 1 p.m.

A railway police constable rushed to the coach and shifted both victims to Gandhi Hospital in a 108 ambulance.

During the investigation, the police learnt that Sirish Kumar is married to Sulochana and the couple have two sons. Preliminary investigation revealed that Sirish Kumar and Neelaveni had allegedly been in a relationship for the past two months.

The pair had reportedly left their village and travelled to Coimbatore about a month ago. After tracing them, Sulochana allegedly counselled the two and persuaded them to return to Hyderabad along with her on the Sabari Express.

However, before the train reached Secunderabad, Sirish Kumar and Neelaveni allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and lost consciousness.

The incident has been registered as a medico-legal case, and the Government Railway Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the step.
