The Government of Manipur has intensified efforts to resettle more than 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) by March, the State’s Chief Secretary, Puneet Kumar Goel, said on Thursday (January 29, 2026).

They belong to some 10,000 families displaced since the ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities broke out on May 3, 2023.

Mr. Goel said the government has rehabilitated over 3,700 families, comprising 16,500 people, to date. The State has released approximately ₹124 crore towards the initiative.

The government emphasised a holistic approach, aiming not just to relocate families from relief camps but to restore livelihoods, education, and overall community well-being. “Our priority is a secure and sustainable return to normal life for IDPs,” Mr. Goel said.

By December 2025, more than 2,200 families, around 10,000 IDPs, had been resettled. Under the Special PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin), about 7,000 houses have been sanctioned to replace fully damaged homes, with construction underway at various locations, he said.

A State-Level Committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary and comprising senior officials, including the Commissioner of the Home Department and the Director General of Police, oversees the rehabilitation process. District-level committees under the District Magistrates conduct regular reviews to ensure smooth resettlement.
