A 45-year-old man was killed on the spot and his wife severely injured when a speeding lorry knocked down the moped bike they were riding on the Tumakuru–Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) on Monday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Mohan Kumar S.K. from Gowdanahalli, a weaver heading towards Nelamangala with his wife, identified as Parvathamma, riding pillion.

The accident occurred around 1.45 p.m. when the lorry knocked down the moped from behind near the Fire Station junction.

Due to the impact, both of them fell from the vehicle and came under the truck’s rear wheel, which ran over Mohan Kumar’s head, killing him instantly. Parvathamma sustained injuries on both legs and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Nelamangala traffic police have registered a case against the lorry driver, charging him with offences of death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving. He was arrested, and the truck was seized.
