A 38-year-old man, earlier arrested by the Santosh Nagar police for sexually assaulting a minor boy, was sentenced to undergo six years’ rigorous imprisonment by a special court in Nampally on Tuesday.

The court also slapped a fine of ₹10,000 on the accused.

The accused, identified as Fazal-E-Alam-Kaifi, a resident of Moin Bagh, Hyderabad, was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The incident came to light when the six-year-old boy, who was playing with a group of children on a terrace, failed to return downstairs. His younger sister went to look for him and found the accused, a relative, alone with the boy in a compromising situation. Fazal fled when confronted, and the family lodged a complaint on February 24, 2022.

The case was referred to the Bharosa Centre, where the child and his family received counselling, emotional support and medical assistance.

The conviction followed coordinated efforts by the investigating officers of Santoshnagar police, Special Public Prosecutor M. Ramadevi, legal counsellors at the Bharosa Centre, and court staff.

The proceedings were monitored by DCP Women Safety Lavanya N.J.P., ACP Women Safety Prasanna Lakshmi and Bharosa Centre officials.
