A person from Tamil Nadu who suffered grievous injuries to his major blood vessel was given a new lease of life through an endovascular surgery at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, recently.

Prashanth, 32, of Tirupathur met with a road accident in Kozhikode while travelling to Sabarimala from Kannur. Though seated in the front row of the vehicle, he had not been wearing the seat belt during the journey. Following the accident, Mr. Prashanth was left with fractured ribs and ankle bones.

Hospital sources said on Sunday (October 12, 2025) that since he developed breathing difficulty, he was admitted to the intensive care unit and underwent a CT scan evaluation. He was detected to have an injury to the aorta, the main blood vessel from the heart that pumps blood into all parts of the body, including brain. It was bleeding into his left lung.

Mr. Prashanth was immediately referred to the interventional radiology suite of the Radiology department where he underwent treatment named ‘Fenestartion EndoVascular Aortic Repair’. EndoVascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) is a procedure that involves passing a stent graft through a six mm-sized pinhole into the blood vessel of the groin. In some patients, a meticulously planned hole will be created in this stent graft through which another stent will be placed to protect side branches off the aorta. This procedure is called fenestration EVAR or FEVAR.

After the procedure, he was treated by the Orthopaedics department. Hospital sources said that he returned home in a healthy condition recently. The procedures were led by M.P. Sreejayan, hospital superintendent and Head of the Department of Surgery, and E. Devarajan, Head of the Department of Radiology.
