The Labour Department has made plans to put up 50 resting sheds for construction workers throughout the State, with the initiative targeting urban local bodies.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is spearheading a pilot project, which includes plans to set up these facilities in high-traffic areas, where construction workers often spend extended periods.

Following this, the civic body’s Special Projects wing prepared a prototype for the proposed shed. In June 2025, the GCC opened dedicated 24-hour lounges for gig workers.

An official said the facility for construction workers would include seating, fans, and toilets.

The budget is still being finalised, and the design is under preparation. Construction is expected to pick up once the approvals are in place. The facilities are planned in Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar, Anna Nagar and Kodambakkam zones.

A senior Labour Department official said 46 sites had been shortlisted across urban local bodies. Similar facilities have been proposed in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruppur, Salem, Tambaram and several other municipalities.
