Heralding a fresh chapter in the tourism map of Kozhikode city in Kerala, Minister for Public Works and Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas flagged off the new KSRTC double-decker bus service from its bus terminal on Tuesday morning.
While the ceremonial launch has been completed, the commencement of regular services faces some challenges from low-hanging shade trees along the routes. Authorities said several tree branches at Mananchira Square, near the City Police Commissioner’s Office, Sarovaram Road, and Beach Road pose a physical threat to the 4.7-metre-high vehicle.
Although KSRTC has requested the City Corporation to prune these trees, the work has yet to be carried out.
The double-decker bus is scheduled to operate daily from 3 pm to 10:30 pm, providing a unique sightseeing experience within the city.
Designated routes
The designated routes are Sarovaram Bypass, Arayidathupalam, Mananchira, Francis Road, Kothi Bridge, South Beach, Lions Park, Gandhi Road and Butt Road.
The bus has a total seating capacity of 64, with 36 seats on the upper deck and 28 on the lower deck. While ticket prices are still being finalised, officials expect the fare for an upper-deck seat to be ₹200, with the lower-deck seats costing roughly half that amount.
Passengers will be able to book their tickets via telephone or through an online portal once the service becomes fully operational.
Kozhikode now joins Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Munnar and Thrissur as locations in Kerala offering double-decker services.
