The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is planning to set up a medical college at Amaravati in the State. Twenty medical colleges will be constructed across the country, said Insurance Commissioner for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) T. Renuka Prasad.

“The A.P. government has allotted 20 acres for constructing the medical college at Amaravati. The works will begin soon,” Mr. Renuka Prasad who is also the ESIC South Zone in-charge said.

Speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday, the Insurance Commissioner said the remaining 19 colleges will be established in other States. Tender process for construction of buildings and other works will begin shortly, he said.

“ESIC is operating 79 dispensaries, four hospitals, four dispensaries-cum-branch offices and one corporate hospital at Rajahmundry. Besides, the corporation is having tie-up with 72 hospitals for providing secondary care and 35 hospitals for extending super speciality services in A.P.,” Mr. Renuka Prasad said.

In addition to the existing hospitals, ESIC is proposing to construct about 10 hospitals in the State, for extending better services to the employees.

“One 400-bedded hospital will be established in Visakhapatnam, 100-bedded hospitals are planned at Atchutapuram in Anakapalli district, Guntur, Nellore and Sri City in Tirupati district,” the Insurance Commissioner explained.

Besides, 30-bedded hospitals will be constructed at Eluru, Bhimavaram, Chittoor and Hindupur. The corporation will launch the new hospitals soon, Mr. Renuka Prasad said.

“ESIC will take up recruitment of doctors, nursing, paramedical and other staff to work in the newly proposed hospitals,” the Insurance Commissioner said.
