The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered a suo motu case over alleged lapses in the conduct of the State School Swimming Championship in Thrissur, following reports that a portion of the roof at the venue collapsed, injuring students and parents.

The Commission took cognisance of media reports highlighting the difficulties faced by students during the conduct of the State School Games and the accident at the swimming venue.

The Commission observed that several reports had pointed to serious lapses in the arrangements for the sporting event and alleged negligence on the part of the organisers. It also noted that teachers entrusted with responsibilities at the venue appeared to have failed to discharge their duties responsibly.

The Commission has sought explanations from the Director of General Education, the District Police Chief, the Deputy Director of Education, Thrissur, and the District Child Protection Officer.

The intervention comes amid growing concerns over the safety and basic facilities provided to students participating in the State School Games in Thrissur.
