The State Water Transport Department (SWTD) of Kerala will launch Kuttanad Safari, a package tourism boat service connecting various destinations across the region, by November.
As part of the project, an amphitheatre will be constructed on Pathiramanal island. To promote eco-friendly and responsible tourism, the amphitheatre will be built using sustainable materials such as grass and bamboo.
Officials said preparatory works had already begun and that the amphitheatre’s construction would commence in the coming days. This unique tourism project, implemented in association with Muhamma grama panchayat, is sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation.
Solar-powered passenger boat
For Kuttanad Safari, the SWTD’s new solar-powered passenger boat, Soura-1, will be used. The journey will begin from Alappuzha boat jetty at 10 a.m., with the first stop at Nehru Trophy finishing point. From there, the cruise will continue through the Azhikkal canal, where tourists will be served a traditional breakfast featuring local flavours.
Visitors will have the opportunity to observe and try their hand at traditional coir making, palm frond weaving and mat weaving. Handcrafted items such as palm-frond umbrellas, winnowing baskets, and mats will also be available for purchase.
The safari will then take visitors past real chundan vallams (snakeboats) and offer close-up views of the stunning Kuttanadan landscape, including insights into the formation of the C Block and R Block regions. Upon reaching R Block, a traditional Kuttanadan lunch will be served, featuring a blend of backwater delicacies and toddy-shop specialities.
During the trip, cultural performances such as panchavadyam, shinkari melam, velakali, and kuthiyottam will be staged onboard. By evening, the boat will reach Pathiramanal island, where traditional art forms will be performed at the amphitheatre. Cultural programmes at the theatre will be organised in collaboration with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
On the return journey to Alappuzha, tourists can watch clam harvesting and processing in the backwaters. They will also have the opportunity to shop for Alappuzha’s signature products at floating stores. The safari will conclude at Alappuzha boat jetty at 6 p.m.
A few months ago, as part of implementing the project, Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar visited Pathiramanal island. The SWTD is implementing the project in such a way that tourists can experience the entire scenic beauty of Kuttanad in a single boat journey.
