The flash flood-affected regions in Kerala are likely to witness intensified rainfall over the next two days under the combined influence of cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert on Thursday (August 6, 2026) warning of extreme heavy rainfall in Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Kottayam districts, and an orange alert for Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, where very heavy rainfall is likely.
A yellow alert has been issued for the remaining six districts, warning of isolated heavy rains for the day.
The rain intensity, which remained subdued for the past two days, picked up on Thursday under the combined influence of the upper air cyclonic circulations that persist over south interior Karnataka and the adjoining areas, south coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry; and over southeast Bay of Bengal.
Swell waves
Meanwhile, swell waves measuring 1.2-1.4 metres in height have been forecast until Thursday night in various parts of the State, including the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha coasts. Due to the possibility of a surge in waves during this period, fishermen are advised to operate boats with vigilance, said an IMD weather bulletin.
